Binghamton’s Brian Laing Leads Local Hockey 4 Hope Event to Fight Cancer
BINGHAMTON, NY – Local business owner Brian Laing, of Laing Self Storage, is skating once again for a cause close to his heart — the Hockey 4 Hope charity game. This annual Binghamton tradition blends fast-paced hockey action with a powerful mission: raising awareness and funds for cancer research and support through the Constance Foundation.
Since its first faceoff in 2010, Hockey 4 Hope has raised more than $300,000 for local cancer programs. The event draws a mix of former NHL players, local athletes, and community members — all united in honoring survivors, supporting those in treatment, and remembering loved ones lost.
A Personal Connection to the Cause
Laing’s journey with Hockey 4 Hope began in 2006 after losing his aunt, Constance “Connie” Glauser, to breast cancer. What started as a way to honor her memory has grown into a major sponsorship role for Laing Self Storage.
“The game has grown tremendously because of community and local business support,” Laing said. “As a business owner, I feel a responsibility to help causes that matter to our employees and our neighbors.”
Community, Competition, and Commemoration
Held at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, the event typically draws around 1,000 spectators. Players skate with the names of those battling cancer or who have passed away displayed on the backs of their jerseys. Between periods, fans enjoy raffles, silent auctions, and the heartfelt Light the Ice tribute ceremony.
Local volunteer Mari-Jo Kinney organizes year-round fundraising, including 50/50 raffles, basket auctions, and sponsorship outreach. Former NHL player Chris Bala also joins the game annually, praising Laing’s energy and commitment: “Brian and his staff bring so much life to the event — they really make it special.”
From Self Storage to Community Impact
Though relatively new to the self-storage industry, Laing has quickly grown Laing Self Storage into four locations across Binghamton, Endwell, Endicott, Conklin, and Greene, NY — with more expansion underway. He credits the business’s success with giving him the resources to give back.
“We raise money through donations and raffles, but it’s about more than hockey,” Laing said. “It’s about remembrance, inspiration, and showing that this community stands together.”
The 2025 Hockey 4 Hope Charity Game will take place in March at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.
